Food Blog | Meng Meng Roasted Duck
Been having a lot of chicken rice lately, and I had yet another one. In Taman Mount Austin lies a really popular duck rice shop. It’s nearly always completely full, and the fresh scent of it fills the room the moment you step into the restaurant.
Is this place Halal?
No. Meng Meng Roasted Duck is a non-halal restaurant. It serves pork in their menu.
Where it Is
Here’s another restaurant among the many in Mount Austin. It is near Sunway College Johor. A few landmarks to look for would be Secret Recipe and Moonlight Cake house. It is one of the shops in between the two, so once you see either, you can pretty much start parking. It is also directly beside Black Ball.
Address: 阿明帝王鸭, 1, Jalan Austin Height 3, Taman Mount Austin, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor
What it Costs
I would say it is one of the rarer budget meals you can find in Mount Austin. I mean, it is chicken rice, you kind of expect it to be budget. But the price is still a bit short of some other restaurants like Kang Bee Heong Chicken Rice, with 2 meats coming in at around RM9, and 3 meat + rice coming at between RM10.80.
The portions, I would say, are not too big, which brings me to say that I feel like I’ve seen better value at other chicken rice shops, but I think I would say that considering the area, it is still considered one of the cheaper meals you will be able to find here.
You can ask for more of their gravy if you desire, as well.
How it Tastes
Underwhelming. Perhaps the fact that I’ve eaten quite a lot of (better) chicken rice lately, I was a little bit underwhelmed by the duck and chicken offered here. I personally would have liked a taste that popped off your tongue a little bit more. (not just the gravy but the meat)
The soup is fairly decent, so I guess that is their saving grace. They produce a soup which actually doesn’t taste like water, unlike many other chicken rice shops.
Their duck rice comes with cucumbers, and that’s about it. Maybe it is my personal preferences, but I felt that I’ve had better duck/chicken rice elsewhere.
Suitable for…
-Family (Maybe not so much so, a really crowded place, sometimes it is difficult to find a seat. Doesn’t really have that homely feeling to it)
-Friends (A cheap, clean place to eat with friends and chit-chat)
-Solo (Maybe a fast bite? But don’t see too many people coming here solo)
-Colleagues (Cheap, convenient. I think this meeets every criteria)
-Little kids (I mean kids love chicken rice, do they not?)
-Dating (Ermm, maybe not the first few dates at least, I guess)
Star Rating
5.5/10. Given how crowded it is, I expected a lot more out of this restaurant. The taste just isn’t strong enough for me to appreciate. Hence, I’m giving this place a 5.5/10. But it is what it is. It is VALUE. It is CHEAP. Can always come here for a quick lunch.
With that being said, although I’m giving it a 5.5/10, it is a place that I probably eventually come back to, given its price and convenience.
