Food Blog | Garage 51 | Subang Jaya

Another one of those top places to go on the Burpple Top 100 for Kuala Lumpur restaurants in 2019, so I decided to pay it a visit. Slightly by chance because me and my sister actually wanted to go to After Black - happened to be closed on the day - so we saw Garage 51 a few shop lots up.

Context: Came here for lunch with my sister! What I’ll say is that they’ve got all the payment options available and here’s my review of the limited things we tried (I acknowledge that this probably isn’t the most complete review).

Is it Halal?

No halal certification, but there is a pork-free rule that they go by here - and I see a lot of Malay patrons eating here, so I guess this is one of the more Muslim friendly hipster cafes. But as always, eat at your own discretion pertaining to this.

Where it Is?

It is located in Bandar Sunway - almost right next to Sunway College and Sunway University, so this should be quite easy to find. I think parking depends on the day you go (there’s A LOT of vaping/car workshops here, so sometimes it can be hard to find parking). I had a little bit of difficulty, but in the end I managed to get lucky and find a parking lot relatively near Garage 51.

It is actually pretty much shaped like the entry to a garage too, so that’s cool.

Address: 51, Jalan PJS 11/9, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Operating Hours:

Daily: 11am to 11pm (No off days)

Garage 51 Set Menu

What it Costs

My sister and I ate for RM67.30 (so talking about around RM33 per person), but we did add a Sweet Potato Fries (RM15) for us to share.

I ordered the Soft Shell Crab Rice Bowl (RM23) and my sister ordered something from the breakfast side of the menu - the Toast with Avocado, Egg, Salmon & Pesto (RM20). There’s also a 10% service charge (RM5.80) and a 6% service tax (RM3.48). Free water here.

Other prices for things on the menu include pancakes (RM15), vegan options like their Vegan Burrito Bowl with Spiced Rice, Sweet Corn, Black Beans, Sweet Potato & Avocado (RM17) and their fitness bowls (Eg. 200g Teriyaki Chicken Breast with Salad - RM10).

If anything, in my opinion, this is more for fitness buffs who want to count their calories (all measurements are given, honestly a REALLY healthy selection in their menu). According to Burpple (which I love using), their Baked Eggs is what you should be ordering here - I didn’t on this occasion.

They also have a weekday set lunch for RM10 (with an iced lemon tea), if you’re looking for a good deal!

How it Tastes

The secondary reason why I would say it is for fitness buffs is because I think the food is a little on the bland side here.

Sweet Potato Fries

Starting off with the Sweet Potato Fries, the sweet potato fries itself are pretty tasty and nice to eat. The sauce it comes with, on the hand, is a little underwhelming. It pretty much has the consistency of something closer to water than that of a mayo - which I guess makes it almost strange (and not that tasty) to complement the fries. (I would almost say to use the thicker sauce that they use on the Soft Shell Crab Rice Bowl).

(I would say that the Sweet Potato Fries comes way behind the Pumpkin Fritters offered by Mei - a personal favourite)

Soft Shell Crab Rice Bowl

Soft Shell Crab Rice Bowl

Then onto the Soft Shell Crab Rice Bowl. Overall pretty tasty. Just ends up being a little dry because you have fried food on top of white rice with not much of a sauce so for me a little on the dry side. The soft shell crab itself is a bit meh, so I guess not too much to write home about.

Toast with Avocado, Egg, Salmon & Pesto

I’ll give their toast with avocado, egg, salmon and pesto a passing grade just because I think their pesto goes well with the rest of the ingredients. Egg, toast prepared well (well I don’t know what else you guys want me to say about these kinds of dishes) so this is a decent brunch option.

(I recognise this place is probably also a good coffee and dessert spot - me and my sister didn’t have any specialty drinks because she wanted bubble tea from nearby - so I do recognise this is quite far from a complete review, but this is just my thoughts from what I tried)

Star Rating

5/10. Good ambience (and free WiFi - just ask the staff for the password), but I’m probably not coming back here for the food (or at least the breakfast/lunch/dinner). In my opinion, has many similarities to Mei (also considered a fairly healthy eating spot) and I just think that the quality - at a similar price point - is just much better at Mei.

Probably the reason for the slightly harsher review, but a nice spot to have coffee (or at least it has the ambience for it)!
