Quick Bites | March Cafe Hopping | Johor Bahru Food Reviews
There’s been quite a few cafes that I’ve had lately that I haven’t quite gotten enough to work with (ordered enough things) to substantiate a full review. So this is a new ‘segment’ that lets me show the things that I tried over the course of a month in a short and concise manner.
Here’s what I tried over March!
Rabbit Softserve | Taman Century
What we had: Waffles with Double Scoop Ice Cream (RM24)
First stop for the month is Rabbit Softserve and their waffles with ice cream. I would say that all around this is a really good dessert. I would say that the thing that sticks out to me is the richness of their ice creams. We chose their strawberry and I believe it was called Triple Chocolate or something like that.
Immediate thing that hits me is the creaminess and the richness of both of these flavours. Lots of flavour and a nice creaminess to round off. If anything I would say that the triple chocolate almost suffers from being too chocolatety if you know what I mean. I wouldn’t exactly say it is to the point where I would consider it bitter but you get the general idea. Very strong chocolate flavour is basically what I’m trying to say.
That’s probably why I would say I’m a bigger fan of their strawberry flavour (I’m not too sure what flavour exactly it was because they have seasonal options, but I think it was called Volcano Strawberry).
The waffles are crispy and hot and generally it’s a well done waffle that goes very well both aesthetically and in terms of palatability.
Rating: 8.5/10. Pretty place, and if their other desserts are as yummy, this is a really nice place to come for post lunch desserts (it closes at 7pm daily). It’s definitely a place I will probably end up at again one way or another.
Megumi Japanese Restaurant | Mid Valley JB
What we had: Unadon & Sashimi Set (RM39.90) Tori Teriyaki Set (RM19.90) Lobster Sarada Temaki (RM8.90) Green Tea (RM1.90 x 2 - but they give 2 jugs, as we ordered one hot one cold) Total: RM84.10
Now for a Japanese food option. In terms of quality I would say that this is a bit below Warakuya in terms of quality (and I guess it falls even further behind in terms of variety in choice).
The bad parts: the lobster sarada temaki is very meh, I can’t really even pick out the lobster and I guess I would just recommend avoiding the dish as a whole. The sashimi from the Unadon & Sashimi set is pretty underwhelming as well, so in general my thoughts about this place is that you generally avoid the uncooked stuff here.
The good parts: their Unadon is pretty decent. Rich sauce, unagi tastes decent and the tori teriyaki set (although I would say that tori teriyaki is one of those safer things to order at Japanese restaurants in general) gets a pass from me. Chawan mushii has quite a lot of things inside and they have some decent sides to start off the meal in the form of pickle and assorted vegetables.
Rating: 6/10. Okay-ish, but I would say it isn’t something in particular that I would recommend. Decent-ish would be where I think this falls. Get hot food here is probably my personal advice.
Grandma Tang | Bukit Indah
What we had: Taufufa with Taro Balls (RM8) Lava Peanut Signature Cube Toast (RM7.50)
In terms of menu, ambience, even lighting, the vibe this is going for is basically a Hong Kong style dessert cafe, and I guess that’s why the first thing that I think off upon walking in is that conceptually, this is very similar to 深夜食糖 (or basically the dessert restaurant at Holiday Villa) near KSL.
I’ll talk more about the lava peanut signature cube toast first because I have more feedback on that. I feel as though this would be SO MUCH better if they just made it bite sized. Like either just leave it as one big toast block or make it bite sized.
I feel as though they made it an awkward size whereby you still have to cut it but they’re trying to make it finger food, so it’s a bit strange to me. I understand making it smaller probably makes it a lot harder to cook, but if that’s the case then just leave it as one big toast block. It’s fundamentally the same in my eyes.
(I get it, maybe they’re going for high surface area so more crispy, but my issue is just that it’s not bite sized so you end up having to cut it anyways). This one is quite jelat so I would say don’t expect to eat much else if you do choose to order this. The peanut sauce is decent and goes pretty well with the toast, but I would say it falls quite far behind in terms of flavour as compared to something I’m more familiar with - Kim Gary.
In terms of Taufufa, I’m a fan. This is a really nice textured taufufa with decent toppings to boot so I would say that for me, it’s pretty decent.
Just a side note that I’ve had other people tell me that some of their other desserts are quite meh so I guess maybe just take that with a pinch of salt and keep that in mind.
Rating: 6/10. But I think that this 6/10 is definitely subject to change given what I assume to be a lot of variability in reviews of other desserts, so if I do indeed try this again, I will probably either update this part or put a full review post up.
HCR 海南鸡饭 | Eco Botanic
RM4 for Lu Rou Fan? Honestly, this is probably the biggest deal you can get at Eco Botanic right now. Very budget friendly, decent food at a phenomenal price, this is where you can get away with a pretty cheap meal at Eco Botanic.
I’ve tried the Lu Rou Fan (RM4) and the Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Rice (RM7.80) and they’re both pretty good and come with a hearty soup.
Rating: 8/10. Just because in the area, there is nothing that comes close in terms of value, so I think this is an option to consider when getting lunch at Eco Botanic! IMPORTANT: This rating is because of value rather than quality or anything like that.
