Food Blog | Budget Food for Students in Educity | Nusajaya | Gelang Patah | Bukit Indah
When I was thinking up of content for my blog, it just occurred to me that I didn’t share my personal choices for eating on a budget when living in Educity, so here’s my personal guide! These are things that I ate when I lived at Educity.
I’m only mentioning one place in Eco Botanic because I would say that the value for money of some of the other options are just a bit better than what can be found in Eco Botanic.
Bar Wang Mixed Rice
Suitable for: Lunch & Dinner
I think this is a no brainer, really. If you haven’t tried Bar Wang, you are missing out on meals that are really friendly on the wallet. I’m talking meals that would make you even reconsider cooking at home daily.
This is basically a mixed rice shop. You can choose a rice, fried rice or a noodle and you can choose dishes to go with your meal. You have quite a lot of options that have a lot of sauce to a range of vegetables to choose from. The one thing that I will personally say beforehand would be that the food here can be on the salty side, so do choose your dishes wisely.
I normally eat quite a lot, but that being said, I can normally eat for RM 6 here, which is insane value, if you ask me.
Heng Park
Suitable for: Lunch & Dinner
If you want to go a bit further than Bar Wang, you can consider Heng Park, a hawker at the end of Gelang Patah. For lunch, the traffic is usually a bit better, but there’s some decent food there.
I personally think that the mixed rice (zhap fan) at Heng Park is actually pretty tasty - but it comes with the caveat that it isn’t as clean as Bar Wang. Important note here as well, I think that the lunch mixed rice is a lot better than the dinner mixed rice. A lot more options, and the dishes are tastier as well.
You can also get chicken rice (both lunch and dinner) and I think that the Western shop that opens for dinner (I’m not sure why, but it does not open regularly, so take a mental note of that) that serve up decent Western meals for around RM7. Honestly, I think the Western shop, when open is the most value for money Western meal you will find around - and it honestly tastes decent.
The other shop to take note is the Jiao Cai store beside the mixed rice. This store is actually really value for money too! My only advice is to not order the Hokkien Mee - I say this as someone from KL. The rest are pretty good. From the Salted Egg Chicken Rice to their Fried Rice, their portions are actually pretty big - I honestly think that these are decent options to try for dinner (I think for some people buying 1 portion of fried rice might even be enough for 2 meals).
Sometimes I will even call ahead and order and just collect where the stall is.
HCR Chicken Rice
HCR actually has a wide variety of meal options - from your classic chicken rice, to Lu Rou Fan (RM4!) to salted egg yolk chicken rice. This, for me, is without doubt the best value for money you will get in Eco Botanic. You can read my full review here! It’s the last one I mention on the list.
Nasi Kukus Ayam Dara
Suitable for: Lunch
I talk about it in a lot of detail here, so just read that! RM6 for a DELICIOUS nasi kukus. Honestly, at least try this one once because it is actually really tasty.
Yusbe Chicken Chop Gelang Patah
Suitable for: Lunch & Dinner (I personally prefer having this for dinner though)
Another option that is maybe a bit further out would be Yusbe. Click here to read more about it. Really value for money Malay style chicken chop. You have big portions and a lot of customisability with your chicken chops.
Honourable Mentions
I’m personally a fan of the Sarawak Kolo Mee in Gelang Patah - this is around RM7 and quite a good option for brunch.
Other cheap places to consider would be S11 (This is a food court and I really love the Nasi Lemak here - on the backside of S11 - not facing the main road) and a more recent favourite would be Qing Feng Huat - a food court. Qing Feng Huat is pretty far, so I wouldn’t go if you’re pressed for time, but I think going to S11 is fairly doable for a quick lunch - given the food comes fast if you order the right things.
One more shoutout for Grandma Ong (Or Wang Nai Nai) that is great for a cozy lunch! Love their Ban Mee combos!
