Food Blog | Regency Restaurant | Brighton

Seaside town means seafood is definitely a must - especially if it is caught fresh! So this is one of those options for you to consider when at Brighton! (don’t do what I did and order the mixed grill haha!)

Where It Is

It is located really near to the British Airways i360 attraction - literally, you have to cross the road and you’re at Regency Restaurant. The British Airways i360 structure is pretty hard to miss because it is really tall and skinny, so just look out for that and you should be able to find your way over to Regency Restaurant.

Address: 131 Kings Rd, Brighton BN1 2HH, United Kingdom

A note about booking a table: you can book a table, but I think it doesn’t help too much - you basically have to be at the restaurant and they’ll find you a table (and sometimes it is really full during dinnertimes). Additionally, if you want to arrange any birthday cakes, calling ahead doesn’t really help - you basically have to tell them in person if you want to arrange anything (this is more because my girlfriend was trying to arrange something).

Operating Hours: Daily 8am - 10pm

What It Costs

Me and my girlfriend ate for 65.97 pounds here - I would say this is about an average of what most people will eat here (maybe on the higher end, but consider that we shared one beverage). Our full order was like so:

1/2 Dozen Oysters 12 pounds
Seafood Risotto 13.95 pounds
Mixed Grill 15.95 pounds
Tequila Sunrise 11 pounds
Homemade Tiramisu 6 pounds
Service Charge 7.07 pounds

Total 65.97 pounds

A few notes about this - I’m not sure if it’s the culture difference, but a birthday cake isn’t free here - just for you to take note of because it depends from place to place whether it is complimentary. I would say that this is definitely on the heavier side for two people - we just about finished this between us. I would probably recommend to change the mixed grill to something like a fish and chips and you should be fine (my decision was more to do with the fact that I had fish and chips at Bankers for lunch as well).

How It Tastes

Honestly speaking, I am a FOOL for deciding to order a Mixed Grill here. In hindsight, what was I thinking? I think that ultimately, you want to order their seafood here - because that’s what you order at a restaurant by the beach.

One thing to note is that the oysters came really late. We had to ask about it, and it came immediately - then, another portion came over to our table - so you can see there was some mixup along the way. Depends on how you see it - the fact that they were responsive to us enquiring about where it is, or the fact the mistake shouldn’t have been made, to begin with.

So, to start, the risotto. Fantastic! Absolutely loved it. I’m someone who loves my risotto (although usually of the mushroom variety) and this is one of the few non-mushroom risottos that I genuinely enjoyed. It’s a really good risotto. The mussels are also really good - this is a good dish that I recommend you order!

My mixed grill is - meh. And that’s partially my own fault. You have steak, lamb chop, egg, sausage, and bacon. It’s one of those not good, not bad dishes, but not something I would recommend. The meat is well seasoned and overall, it’s okay.

To be perfectly honest, I was slightly underwhelmed by the oysters. I’ve read quite a few nice things about their oysters in particular but it felt a bit sandy. The oysters taste fresh and still taste pretty good, but I can’t really get very far past the fact that it’s sandy. (Just for reference, it’s not those slimy type that you can slurp, it’s the harder type)

The Tiramisu is pretty yummy and a good way to end the meal. This is probably one of the most enthusiastic birthday songs I have ever been a part of, so that’s a plus point for them. But again, consider the fact that this isn’t a complimentary dessert.

Star Rating

6.5/10. This is a pretty hit-and-miss restaurant - and you can see it from the reviews on Google and TripAdvisor too. Most of the time, it’s good - and I would say my experience overall was still a pleasant one. But this restaurant isn’t the most consistent with regard to quality - like the sandy oysters.
