Food Blog | Maguro Father | East Coast Road | Singapore

With an almost members-only vibe, Maguro Father is a relatively new (opened December ‘22) Japanese place that you really wouldn’t even know if you didn’t intentionally go looking for it. Serving up fresh Japanese food, this is definitely a place to go to get your Japanese food fix!

Where it Is

It is located along East Coast Road, but you most certainly wouldn’t even know it as there isn’t even an explicit sign outside labelling it as “Maguro Father'“. The exterior was exactly as below:

Maguro Father is the shop lot on the left of Snooze Hotel

The funniest part is that even when you go in there’s a layer of curtains that mean you don’t really get to see the restaurant until you’re brought in by the staff. But I guess that’s part of the member’s only vibe that you get when visiting Maguro Father. I HIGHLY recommend booking before hand, it’s easy enough to do via Google directly when you Google Maguro Father.

What it Costs

I came here with my parents and I would describe this as probably what is considered on the cheaper end of patrons of The Maguro Father. No drinks, no Omakase. I frankly think that a lot of the people eating here will be having Omakase - and from the other tables, the Omakase looks good and is presented in some fancy boats.

Here’s what we had and a breakdown of the prices:

Gokujo Sushi Set ($62)
Hokkai Don Set ($45)
Special Maguro Don Set ($62)
Hot Green Tea ($1.80)
Cold Green Tea ($2.80)
Service Charge of 10% ($17.36)
GST of 9% ($17.19)
Total: $208.15

Note that water is free here.

How it Tastes

I personally had the Hokkai Don set. Basically it’s a combination of Scallop, Salmon, 2 Seasonal Fish, Aka Ebi, Uni & Ikura. In short, really fresh fish. Really loved every piece of seafood of mine. Strictly speaking, I think that it is pretty value even at the $45 price point just because of how delicious the whole bowl is.

You also get a salad, chawan mushi, soup, and a mochi dessert to go with your set. All of which were great as well. Their chawan mushi in particular caught my eye as well, because it is one of those two-layer chawan mushi.

My parents had the other two dishes, and I must note that their fish to rice ratio is really good - in the sense that you have a lot more seafood compared to rice, which is something I almost appreciate because usually it’s the other way around. Here’s the Special Maguro Don Set just for reference.

The Gokujo Set is considered one of their higher end sushi sets that are not Omakase. I tried a few pieces too and those were great too!

Star Rating

8/10. A bit of a shorter review than normal, just because we mostly had our own dishes, but giving this a solid 8/10. Good food, nice vibes, and fresh sushi that everyone can enjoy, so I’ve got no complaints on that end.
