Food Blog | Yuan's Eatery Sunway Emerald
To have a cheap food option in this area is an absolute DREAM COME TRUE for me. Yuan Eatery is a really nice addition to the Sunway Iskandar area for all you ‘Zhap Fan’ or budget eaters!
Edit: Yuan Eatery has been rebranded to Hao Yuan Kopitiam - will be back to review when I am free! (25/10/2019)
Is it Halal?
No, this is a non-halal restaurant as they serve up pork in the menu. Not sure about the other stuff like the chicken, but I would generally advise you to eat at your own discretion if you would like to eat here.
Where it Is?
It is located at Emerald Boulevard - which I guess not many people would know about given it is so new. It is basically a row of shoplots in between Citrine Hub and before the turning to Caltex.
What you’ll want to look out for if you’re looking for Yuan’s Eatery would be a big Brazzo sign of one of the shops. Basically keep going straight in - you’ll see a Burger Bandit restaurant (which I’ve reviewed on this blog) and Yuan’s Eatery is basically right beside it!
Address: 44-01 & 45-01, Laman Niaga Sunway, Persiaran Medini 3, Sunway Iskandar Bandar, 79250 Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia
Operating Hours:
Honestly, I’m not sure about this but what I’m pretty sure about is that they’re open on all weekdays ( I think)
Weekdays: 7am-3pm
(I’m really not sure about weekends or even whether the statement above is entirely accurate, but I believe it is true)
What it Costs
The difficult part about this particular review is that the promotion is actually really good. I’ve been having their RM5 opening promotion - 1 meat, 1 vegetable and unlimited rice - a few times now. Honestly speaking this is a REALLY good deal for this area.
The problem is that I find it hard to justify buying the same thing for RM8 (what is supposedly normal price). But I’ll just tell you my opinions about it for now because there doesn’t seem to be a deadline when this promotion is finishing.
At RM5, it doesn’t particularly fill me up entirely (or the people I’ve come here with) so I recommend maybe ordering one more dish to share or something like that.
How this place works is that they basically have an everyday menu. This means that you have around 6 meats, 6 vegetables and 3 eggs that are available everyday (the same rotation). But in addition to that, you have 1 meat, 1 vegetable, 1 fish and an egg dish that is different for each day of the week. This means that this then becomes one of those places that it is hard for you to get bored of!
Being a fan of Zhap Fan, I almost would even go as far to say that this is probably an upgraded version of Zhap Fan because food is ‘cleaner’ because it is all in the kitchen before your number on your receipt is shown on the screen.
There’s also soup for RM1 (off promotion price is RM2) and they have a similar promotion going on for breakfast.
How it Tastes
It basically tastes yummy la. That’s pretty much what I have to say about this place. Pretty much all the dishes I have sampled have AT LEAST met the mark.
In general, the ones that I have personally tried and enjoyed include the sweet & sour pork, the sambal kangkung (Thursday vegetable special), the vegetable curry and the sweet & sour pork chop (seems to be a theme of sweet and sour XD, but I won’t deny it is pretty tasty!)
The braised pork belly is a bit meh to me because it isn’t that really soft kind that I personally like - and has bits of bone/something else in it, but the rest of the dishes here come off with an at least acceptable grade, so I think this is still a really nice place.
If you were to ask me how is the value here in comparison to an average cai fan place, I still feel as though you will get better value from a normal cai fan place - simply because here the dishes come in small plates, so I think you can get more food at a normal cai fan place.
That being said, this place DEFINITELY has higher quality food compared to your average cai fan restaurant/stall.
Star Rating
7.5/10. But this is with the caveat that this promotion is still ongoing. This place’s strengths at the moment are clear to see. A RM5 lunch in Sunway Iskandar which includes unlimited rice, a vegetable and a meat. They have a tasty selection of food, and I still find it hard to see why they wouldn’t do well if they increase the price after this promotion.
But if they do switch back over to RM8, I would probably put this place at a 6.5/10. The food is still tasty, but I would say their portions are a little bit too small - especially in comparison to what other zhap fan I can get at RM8.
That being said, I think I just want to make one thing clear at the end of all of this: the food is really yummy here!
