Food Blog | Bukit Indah 住家 Zhu Jia Nasi Lemak | Bukit Indah

I’ve heard a lot of stories about this 18 year old Nasi Lemak place and I just couldn’t resist the temptation to explore and I guess find out a bit more about it. There aren’t too many English references for it, so I thought that putting this up would be helpful to people eating in the area!

Directly translated from Chinese, Zhu Jia means ‘live at home’, which is actually basically their concept because it is literally a restaurant operated from home.

The view from the front, what you want to do is enter from the back!

Context: Came here once unsuccessfully, more because I didn’t really know how to get into the restaurant itself but on my second attempt, me and my girlfriend kinda figured it out, but quite frankly, it’s not the clearest place to get to.

Is it Halal?

I honestly have no idea, but I would say it is probably one of the more okay spots to come - in the sense that you can order a fried rice (which from what I’ve seen is pretty safe) and a fried chicken if you’re worried about anything, but as always, eat at your own discretion.

As you’ll read at the end, I personally think this is more of a ‘takeout’ kind of place.

Where it Is

It is basically a house (and I mean that in the most literal sense of the word). What I advice for you would be to park on the road where the nursery is at (it’s basically right in front of this particular restaurant) and walk over. You’ll want to be looking out for the backdoor which is the kitchen, which also happens to be the entrance. I can’t stress this enough because the backdoor is the entrance.

Address: No 78 Jalan Indah 4/2 Taman Bukit Indah

Operating Hours:

Daily: 3pm-11pm (No off-days)

For more enquiries and takeaway, etc. you can contact this number: 0177233062 . I believe they’re on Grab delivery as well!

What it Costs

In general, you’re looking at a meal of around RM10 (probably a bit less) per person when you eat here. The general combination for you to be ordering here would be in 2 parts:

1) Your Main

Either a nasi lemak (what they’re known for), a lou shu fun (noodles) or a fried rice.

As you’ll read later on, this egg might not suit everyone’s taste (and I understand why)

2) Choice of fried chicken part

They basically have almost any part of the chicken under the sun so just ask for whatever part you want and you shall receive.

This set would be RM7. But if you would like an a-la-carte main, that will be RM5 and fried chicken (1 piece) would be RM4. An extra egg is RM1 and upsizing your main would be RM1.

How it Tastes

As I said, this post was more out of telling people how to get here rather than an extra recommendation (because this place has been recommended to me before) because this section isn’t going to be the nicest on them.

住家 Nasi Lemak

In my opinion, the only component for me to be excited about would be the fried chicken. Crunchy, juicy, good texture and taste. Not going too lie, really happy with that, no complaints at all.

But for the rest of the nasi lemak, it falls pretty flat for me. The rice itself I would probably say is closer to chicken rice rice rather than nasi lemak rice - lacks the fragrance and I guess there’s no flavour that you would usually find in a good nasi lemak.

The sambal is almost an in between of a Malaysian and Singaporean style sambal (and I say this being a Malaysian that was brought up in Singapore). It is almost in between too many styles and I find it meh to be honest. If you ask me, I think that they should go the sweeter direction because that would add a bit more flavour to improve the dish as a whole.

住家 Nasi Lemak Fried Chicken

You have a piece of prawn cracker that is in place of the more traditional peanuts and anchovies. Depends on how you personally feel about that and then you have cucumbers (no, I’m not going to praise or criticise cucumbers).

In terms of the egg, I’m okay with it personally, but when I saw it I literally turned to my girlfriend and asked whether she’s a fan (because I know she HATES runny/undercoooked eggs) and to my amusement she said she wasn’t a fan of the eggs. Just something to take note of because it is admittedly on the underdone side.

My girlfriend has tried all 3 of the mains and she says the fried rice is bland, the lao shu fun is ‘okay-ish’, so I guess you can take her word for it for that or try it yourself. XD

Star Rating

4/10. I apologise but I cannot bring myself to recommend this place. I would personally recommend takeaway because I almost feel it suits takeaway better (more comfortable home environment, etc.), but this nasi lemak falls flat for me but the saving grace for this place for me is their fried chicken.
