Food Blog | Off Day Cafe | Eco Botanic
Pretty, minimalist and yummy is probably how I would describe Off Day Cafe Eco Botanic. This is a pretty nice place to come for your late breakfast meals (or brunches) or just for some dessert after dinner.
Context: Came here for a little dessert after dinner at Poke Go (review coming up on the blog in due course). They ran out of their Burnt Cheesecake, so we tried out a few of their other desserts.
Is it Halal?
Generally speaking, I think that this is one of those places that comes under “probably not certified but probably halal ingredients”. Their brunch options don’t contain pork (or at least from what I saw) and their desserts are on the safe side (Cheesecakes, Shortcakes, Waffles, etc.). But as always, eat at your own discretion if you’re concerned about this.
Where it Is
Off Day is a minimalist cafe located on the back row of Eco Nest. It is along the same row as Northern Northern Nyona Delight Restaurant and on the row at the back of Kang Bee Hong & Quu. Just keep going along and you’ll find it (white exterior with a quaint interior).
Address: 57, Jalan Eko Botani 3/7, Taman Eko Botani
Operating Hours:
Mon, Wed, Thurs: 9am to 6pm
Friday, Sat, Sun: 9am to 10pm
Tuesdays are their Off Day (sorry for the pun)
What it Costs
I’m not going to lie. The only thing that puts me off coming here more regularly is the price. Despite being close to EduCity, this place is probably more catered to Singaporean wallets than to student wallets (and I say this as a student who used to live in Singapore, so I have the authority to say that).
Me and my girlfriend shared their Freshly Baked Strawberry Shortcake (RM13) & Tiramisu Cake (RM16), as well as a drink - their Pink Lady (RM15). The total came up to RM48.40 for the two of us after adding 10% service charge (so talking about ~RM25 per person for dessert and a drink alone).
So, you might hear that and think: hey, they isn’t exactly THAT expensive. But trust me when I say this, it is expensive for the size that they’re giving you (at least for my personal standards). The Strawberry Shortcake is actually a really small piece of cake if you ask me.
And please keep in mind that their most expensive cake is actually their cheesecake (which they ran out of on the day we went), at RM22, so just worth keeping in mind.
How it Tastes
But despite bashing the price like a million times, I will say that the cakes taste pretty darn good. And I’m not just talking about 1 of them, I’m talking about both of them. It’s to the point where my favourite cake actually contrasts with my girlfriend’s.
My personal favourite is the Strawberry Shortcake. There’s this really rich layer of cream that doesn’t even taste fattening at all and I think it is absolutely yummy. The whole cake goes together really well to make a really yummy cake - and I really appreciate that strawberry in the cake, as those are some tasty strawberries being used.
Next up, the Tiramisu Cake. And what I’ll say is that I haven’t found many more authentic than the one found here in Malaysia. Fluffy with that almost ice cream (I believe it is actually Mascarpone) like texture in the middle topped with luscious espresso on top to complete the cake.
Both are tasty, but my personal winner is still the Strawberry Shortcake.
The Pink Lady is one of those drinks you would probably get and feel it is super refreshing but a bit on the overpriced side, but I’ll leave that be. (they’ve got free water here - self service)
Star Rating
8/10. Just a little bit torn over how much I punish this place over the price, but at the end of the day, I love this place. Probably not the type of place that students can come every week, but definitely maybe once every 3-6 months or so.
Excellent ambience (lovely interior design), delicious cake, so I can’t really complain. This is definitely a place that is definitely worth visiting at the very least on one occasion!
