Food Blog | Taste by Kate Gastronomic Ice Cream | Nusa Sentral
As usual, I’m always on the hunt with new dessert spots and this was one that I came across online: Taste by Kate. If anything, this is a VERY KL Ice Cream Bar-esque type of cafe (think Inside Scoop if you know of it, because it is really similar in concept).
Update (9th June ‘22): Unfortunately Taste by Kate closed down due to the pandemic.
Context: Came here with my girlfriend post-dinner. A pretty quiet and cozy place (I would say this would probably come under the “Hidden Gems” category because not many will have even heard of this place, but this is a cool place to check out for special occasions!
Is it Halal?
This is one of those that come under it’s pretty much halal but there’s no certification. No pork, no lard. But as always, eat at your own discretion if you’re concerned about this.
Where it Is
When I was looking up this place, I actually thought it was among the cafes at the Horizon Hills area. Instead, it is in a pretty secluded area about 5 minutes away from Horizon Hills called Nusa Sentral.
You can see it from the main road and parking is free, but I think this is just one of those places where you’re going to have to put in the GPS because there aren’t too many landmarks around it.
Address: Nusa Sentral, No 9, Jalan Sentral 25, Taman Nusa Sentral, 79100 Nusajaya, Johor
What’s on their Menu?
I feel like eventually I’ll be back to try more of their offerings, but this is definitely one of those places where it depends on how full you are after dinner. You can go simple and order a simple single scoop ice cream, or go for a heavier option like a cake or ice cream together with a waffle.
The popular ice cream flavours that they mentioned are their Avocado Black Sugar Ice Cream and their Musang King.
They also have a couple of drinks on their menu for you to try! But this is definitely one of those chill places to come and lepak with friends after a long day!
Drinks are generally RM7-13, a single scoop of ice cream is RM8 (cup) or RM13 (cone), waffles are RM17-22 (the one that I tried is RM22) and cakes are around RM8-11 per slice. (No additional tax costs on top of these listed prices).
How it Tastes
In terms of the ice creams, they definitely have that Inside Scoop feel! I thought that the Avocado & Black Sugar flavour was very light and refreshing! Almost doesn’t feel like ice cream but has enough creaminess to make it a tasty experience.
They have other interesting flavours like Black Sesame, Musang King (which my girlfriend enjoyed a lot - I’m not a fan of durian at all so I avoided it XD) and Rock Melon.
We ordered the Matcha White Chocolate and Strawberry Waffle (RM22).
What I’ll say first is that all 3 components are great! The waffle is hot and crispy with a wonderful taste. The strawberry ice cream is super rich - almost to the point that it feels like strawberry gelato and the I would say that the matcha sauce is super rich as well, you can really taste the umami-ness coming from the matcha.
The only thing that maybe could be better is the pouring experience of the matcha could be more aesthetically pleasing. It sort of falls like blobs (and I recognise in my personal inability to pour things smoothly, but this is a REALLY SMALL thing that I’m not even bothered about.
Star Rating
8.5/10. I honestly think Johor Bahru needs most of these kinds of places that serve up premium ice creams, so call me a fan! Eventually I’ll be back at some point and I’m quite sure that once people find out of this place it will become more popular.
