Food Blog | The Gellee | Eco Botanic | Johor Bahru

On this week’s food adventure around Eco Botanic, I’m featuring The Gellee Corndogs & Desserts on the blog! This is a pretty neat and cozy Korean-style dessert and snack cafe perfect to unwind after a long week with their sweet treats. Here’s what I thought of the place.

Note: I’ve only tried what’s listed below, so I’m not personally sure about how their corndogs taste, so do take note of that.

The Gellee Eco Botanic Desserts

Is it Halal?

I double checked on their Facebook page that they are no pork, no lard - so I’m assuming they’re using some sort of chicken sausage of some sort for their corndogs, but do double check with them if you’re concerned about this.

The Gellee Interior

Where it Is

It is located in Eco Botanic - in the square of shops surrounding Eco Nest apartments. It is along the same row as Toast & Toast, 99 Speedmart and Grandma Ong (it is basically directly beside Grandma Ong). Parking is free but sometimes a bit crowded during peak hours, but the area is generally big enough for you to get a parking nearby.

Address: 23 Jalan Eko Botani, 3/5 Taman Eko Botani, 79100 Gelang Patah, Johor

Operating Hours:

Monday - Saturday : 11am - 8pm (Tuesdays are their off days)
Sunday: 2pm - 9pm

What it Costs

Important to note: at time that I ate here, they accept CASH ONLY. So for all those e-wallet and card users out there bring a bit of cash along! This is one of those places where you place your order at the counter and pay before you receive the food.

Chocolate Chip with Pecan Waffle (RM15)

Chocolate Chip with Pecan Waffle (RM15)

Me and my girlfriend shared the following:

Chocolate Chip with Pecan Waffle (RM15)
Apple Cinnamon Croiffle with added fresh cream (RM14 - note: plus RM2 for fresh cream)

Total: RM29 - No additional taxes.

Just for a side note: I double checked with their menu online and apparently their Apple Cinnamon Croiffle is supposed to be RM13 + 2 for the fresh cream, but the receipt for mine was for RM14 so I guess that’s a RM1 discount for me XD.

But if you would like to see their full menu, you can click on the link right over here. But a short summary of their menu would be this: Different types of Waffles, Croiffles, Corndogs, drinks and Brownies/Basque Cheesecake.

In many ways, I appreciate that they kept it simple and served what they are good at rather than any old dessert - which is another way of me saying they have a fairly simple menu, but these are all dishes that are all tasty, which I appreciate.

How it Tastes

I think the one thing that I must start off by talking about here is that if you do not want a heavy dessert, just go for the croiffle and don’t add the cream. Whilst tasty, I would say that there is a LOT of cream in proportion to the serving size of their croiffle AND their waffles, so just do take note of that because it can be a bit jelat.

If you want to just appreciate the taste of their desserts then skip out on the cream. Some (if not all) of their waffles come with the cream by default already (like the photos in this post) so do take note that I personally think that the waffles are for if you’re feeling hungrier!

Apple Cinnamon Croiffle with Cream (RM14)

Apple Cinnamon Croiffle with Cream (RM14)

So first of all, starting off with the croiffle. So what exactly is a croiffle? It’s a combination of a croissant and a waffle, meaning that you have the buttery and flaky nature of a croissant combining with the fluffy and thicker texture of a waffle.

I think my short comparison of how their apple cinnamon croiffle tastes like would be like that of an apple strudel but with the texture of a croissant-waffle. It has that sweetness coming from the baked apple and the savouriness of the croiffle (I think a common theme from here is that the waffle/crofffle itself is quite savoury and it complements the sweet toppings) to make it a great blend!

As I mentioned before, they give almost too much cream in proportion to the amount of croiffle, so for health freaks, just don’t add the fresh cream! But I personally love the fresh cream paired together with this dish, although I will admit that there is too much.

Waffle The Gellee

Next up, the Chocolate Chip & Pecan Waffle. A few things are very pronounced in this dish. The savouriness of the waffle, the sweetness of the cream (because there’s a LOT of cream in this dish as well) and the chocolate chips.

For the waffle, you have a somewhat similar exterior texture of waffle - almost a bit more like a croissant than other waffles I’ve had - but it has that fluffiness which makes this a really good waffle. Overall, as with the croiffle, this is another dessert that I think is great!

Star Rating

8/10. The Gellee focuses on a few dishes that that are good at and execute them really well, which makes this a great place to come for desserts. Really cozy atmosphere and friendly staff coupled with great food makes this a recommendation I’m happy to share on the blog!
