Food Blog | Team Udon | Dataran Merdeka | Kuala Lumpur

Took a mini detour on my dating adventures quite recently - stopping by at the ever so popular Team Udon! Been seeing it quite a bit on my Instagram stories lately, so it was a place that I wanted to check out since I was exploring the Dataran Merdeka area.

Team Udon Dataran Merdeka

Is it Halal

It is not officially halal certified (at the time of writing), but my understanding is that they are in the process of getting certification. Ingredients are sourced from halal suppliers—eat at your own discretion, but I would say that this is definitely one of the more halal-friendly options.

Where it Is

As with most places in KL, parking can be a challenge since a lot of it is side parking. However, I think Dataran Merdeka gets kind of quiet later on the weekends. The one I’m sharing is, in fact, the Dataran Merdeka branch, although there is another branch over at TTDI.

Address: 27-G, Jalan Tun H S Lee, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

Operating Hours:

Interestingly, they recently opened for lunch hours as well here, as I was a bit curious why they only did three and a half hours of business before. So, at least you have that lunch option for visiting Team Udon now, too!

Daily:

12pm - 3pm; 6pm - 9:30pm

What it Costs

We had a meal for two here for RM56.18 (taxes included). A two-person set is actually RM45 (taxes not included), but we chose some udon that had an extra charge—the Buttermilk Udon (RM3) and the Chilli Crab Udon with Shrimp (RM5).

You’ll also get a side (chicken gyoza), green tea (for two), and four pieces of mochi, so I would say for RM28 per person, it isn’t cheap, but it isn’t expensive. But I do think that their monthly special udon offerings also look really interesting most of the time—we didn’t try because we got the set, but they have offerings like their CCC (Creamy Coconut Clam Udon).

2 Person Set X 1 (RM45)
Buttermilk Udon Add-on (RM3)
Chilli Crab Udon w Shrimp Add-on (RM5)
Service Charge (6%) - RM3.18
Total: RM56.18

How it Tastes

I had more of the Chilli Crab Udon - and as someone who grew up in Singapore (albeit not eating that much chilli crab), I would say it is a pretty legit Chilli Crab udon. I’m a fan! Very rich flavours, but not too thick, the udon noodles surprisingly complement the combination quite well. I couldn’t help but think that it might be a super weird combination, but it actually a nice combination.

Think Chilli Crab but maybe in a tomyam kind of direction? I know, maybe a bit of a strange description, but a really nice bowl of udon that will leave you wanting more. I really like the fact that there is mantao with their chilli crab udon as well!

Personally, when I heard buttermilk udon, I was thinking - this is going to be thick and super flavourful, but I honestly think that they toned down the flavour a lot just to make it enjoyable to eat, rather than just the first bite being so rich in flavour.

Buttermilk Udon Team Udon

Their rempah karaage really stands out. Really crispy and flavourful chicken that almost holds it on in a dish that is supposed to be naturally a bit more fattier because of the buttermilk. I do think that one thing about this dish is a bit strange - which is that when you first see it, it looks almost like there is no sauce, just because it is basically the bottom layer only. But apart from that, I would say I wouldn’t have a favourite among the two, it’s more about what you personally would prefer because they’re both fantastic bowls of udon.

Won’t say too much about the gyoza and the mochi, but in general, a nice pairing to complete the meal. When comparing a-la-carte vs set prices, let’s say for buttermilk udon, you would pay RM51 for two (no tax). If you ordered it a-la-carte (RM14.80 each) with chicken gyoza (RM10.80), green tea (RM5 for two), and mochi (RM6.80), you would come to RM52.20 - which now I think about it, maybe it would just be better to just order a-la-carte and get exactly what you want / don’t want because of the minimal cost savings. Sorry, have to be a nerd even though I might be missing some part of the equation.

Star Rating

7.5/10. Very clean place with good service and a nice, hearty bowl of udon. Not necessarily a place that I would be dying to go back to, but I think it’s a really good option if you wanted to grab a bite in the area, whether it be TTDI or Dataran Merdeka.
